Our first son

Words we read in the name ceremony in our shul:

We had the privilege to share last Shabbat with you. Two became three in the passing week. That day of rest was replaced in Motse-Shabes with the most meaningful and strenuous work of our lives and the morning of Sun-day became our private day of Briah, creation, and made us into mothers, at once. Since this creation, unlike in the creation of the world, the separation between light and darkness, between day and night, had come to an end, but like that creation a separation between holy and unholy was formed. While breastfeeding and changing, diapers for the first time, we’ve watched our miracle creation with admiration.

In our partnership the choice of parenthood was well planed, a child did not come into this world because as mere accident. The meticulous process, of which the start and ending are in a clinic, demanded great strength of soul and spirit. During the treatments we discovered that we are less strong then we hoped to be and the need to believe of our future success led us to adopt a personal prayer every morning. Prayer of wishing that now transferred into a prayer of thanking.

We are grateful for the mercies that brought Uriyah to life, and today we express our gratitude to you:

To our families who support us and accompany us in every path we take, and who came here today all the way from Israel to celebrate with us and to be here this very day.

To our friends in Israel and in London, and the Masorti community and Assif within it for all the great help we received and the constant giving that makes us feel at home while away from home.

And at last, to the one who directs everything and who’s name is engraved in our child’s name

Uriyah Shalem. Uri yah, my light and light of yah (God)– the source of life, which are now one. In the Talmud it is said “There are three partners in man, the Holy One, the father, and the mother”. With a personal adjustment, there are four partners in man, the Holy One, the two mothers and a test tube.

Uriyah is also a biblical figure, a soldier in King David’s army, an opinionated man who defies the adultery of David and Bat-Sheva. Defiance that costs him his death. Our Uriyah came to the world with a roar and he indeed is persistent of his want to feed, change, and cuddle. But here the similarity ends and our Uriyah will himself write his own life story. We will educate him to choose to see the positive, to love man and mercy and take responsibility for Tikkun Olam. We will learn with him, and from him.
